Adapalene (Differin®)

This is a designer Retinoid, and its molecular make-up is similar to that of vitamin A.

How Do Patients Use This Acne Medication?

• Apply to the whole area that is affected by acne
• Skin should be dry when applying it
• It can be used once or twice a day, or as directed by the physician
• It is stable in sunlight so patients can use it in the daytime
• Do not use if patients are pregnant, or have eczema

How Well Does It Work?

Patients should see some improvement in 8-12 weeks.

How Does It Work?

The exact mechanism is not known. However, we do know that it works against comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), and also acts to reduce inflammation.

Will There Be Side Effects?

• Some experts suggest that it is less irritating than other retinoids
• Patients may experience burning and redness on their skin as well as some drying
• Their acne may flare before it starts to improve
• Their skin will be more sensitive to sun, wind and cold

• Apply only a small quantity
• To make sure their skin is dry
• Use a gentle skin cleanser
• Use light skin moisturizers
• Use sunscreen

Taking Other Medications?

There are no known interactions, but patients should take care when using this product with other drying products or when using with other photosensitizing drugs.
