Suggestions for office practice involving MRSA patients:

- Contact isolation

- Barrier precautions

  • Book MRSA patients at the end of the clinic day
  • Educate patient about MRSA at home
  • Educate office staff about reducing MRSA spread

Practical Points in Wound Care:

  • Open wounds always contain bacteria
  • Donít try to eliminate bacteria from a wound
  • Donít try to decolonize the nares, if there is an open wound
  • Donít use oral antibiotics to ďtreatĒ wound colonization or wound contamination
  • Donít try to prevent wound infection with antibiotics
  • Discontinue antibiotics when symptoms and signs of infection improve
  • Do not let the presence of MRSA affect your decision about the diagnosis of infection
